Press Release Summary = Half of the 65 million pet dogs in the US today will have
cancer. Many pet owners are not aware of the high incidence of pet cancer,
prevention methods or the options available if one has a pet with cancer. Rookie is
a beautiful dog, a brave spirit with cancer who is in treatment for lymphoma because
The Magic Bullet Fund stepped in to help. Read Rookie\'s story.

Press Release Body = Rookie is a beautiful 8-year-old Beagle who lives with Jennifer
Rendfrey in Boynton Beach, Florida. For the last eight years, Rookie has been
Jennifer's constant companion and friend. Rookie was diagnosed with epilepsy at a
young age. In order to afford costly treatments and medications, Jennifer obtained
pet insurance so she could provide for Rookie's every need.or so she thought.
On February 19, 2007, Jennifer learned that Rookie has lymphoma, a cancer that is
common in dogs. There is treatment available for dogs with this type of cancer, but
Jenn's heart sank when their veterinarian, Dr. Kelleher at Banfield Pet Hospital,
estimated the cost. Rookie's insurance plan would not cover any of the costs and she
couldn't afford the expense, estimated at $4,300.00. Jennifer found an ocologist,
Dr. Stephanie Correa, and began treatment knowing that she wouldn't be able pay for
the whole course of chemotherapy treatments that Rookie would need. It didn't matter
at that moment - Jennifer was determined to help Rookie. Jennifer searched the
Internet for information about treatments and homeopathic remedies for canine
cancer, and that's when she found the Magic Bullet Fund. For the first time in
weeks, Jennifer's spirits were lifted.
The Magic Bullet Fund was founded by medical animal writer Laurie Kaplan in
conjunction with the release of her book, "Help Your Dog Fight Cancer." Laurie's
book has given thousands of pet owners like Jennifer confidence and optimism to help
their beloved canines through cancer treatment. Kaplan's own lymphoma survivor, a
Siberian Husky called Bullet, is the fund's namesake. The Magic Bullet Fund helps
dogs like Rookie who would otherwise not receive treatment at all. Rookie is a
lifelong fighter and continues to fight with dignity and strength.
Thanks to Dr. Correa and the Magic Bullet Fund, Rookie has a chance to live out a
full life with his loving companion, Jennifer. A diagnosis of cancer is not
necessarily a death sentence! Veterinary oncology has made tremendous advances in
the past decade and can help those who love their pets, like Jennifer Rendfrey.
For those who cannot afford to provide treatment for their dogs, the Magic Bullet
Fund offers a reprieve to people like Jennifer and dogs like Rookie -- time for
special moments that will bring lasting memories and, at the very least, an
extended goodbye. Assistance from the Magic Bullet Fund would not be possible
without the passion of people like Laurie Kaplan and fund volunteers, all of whom
have been touched by canine cancer with their own beloved pets, and donations from
individuals and corporations sensitive to the issue of canine cancer. For many who
have lost their companions to this awful disease, giving their time, hearts, and
donations to the Magic Bullet Fund allows their companions to live on through saving
the lives of others.
